In the early 1980’s, Youngstown and many other departments including New York City and Boston experimented with apparatus colors other than the traditional red. Lime green or safety green as it was sometimes called was thought to be more visible both when responding and while sitting on the fire scene. The following Youngstown rigs sported the safety green color scheme during the department’s test period, Engine 3, Ladder 22, Car 31 and Car 32. Ladder 22, which was being rebuilt by American LaFrance was delivered with the lime green paint scheme in October of 1981. The units would eventually be repainted in the traditional white over red color.
