Today In YFD History: October 2, 1978 – Youngstown Public Library Main Library Fire

Photo from the Robin Birkholtz Collection.

Firefighters were summoned to the Main Library on Wick Ave shortly before 6am on October 2, 1978 after an arsonist got into the building and set multiple fires on the 6th floor of the building. Arriving firefighters were able to gain entry into the building by using a plastic card to open the locked door. Three engines, a ladder truck and the squad responded on the initial alarm. Several of the set fires managed to spread into the building's false ceiling. Assistant Fire Chief Michael Dolak requested a second alarm assignment around 6am bringing additional companies to the scene. Numerous firefighters spread tarps over much of the collection to minimize water damage. Firefighter Robert E. Sharp from Ladder 24 received a back injury after falling down a staircase and was transported to St Elizabeth Hospital. The Library opened on December 3, 1910.
