Firefighters Extinguish Roof Fire At V&M Star Story from Youngstown Vindicator on 06/24/2008.
YOUNGSTOWN — City firefighters were called to extinguish a roof blaze at V & M Star on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Firefighters said workers at the steel company had been cutting away some old metal on the three-story roof and accidentally set the wooden understructure on fire around 2 p.m. today.

A ladder truck was used to crew a crew to the roof to put out the blaze. Firefighters said the fire only temporarily disrupted production at the plant.

18 Youngstown Firefighters Accept Retirement/resignation Plan Story from Youngstown Vindicator on 06/20/2008.
YOUNGSTOWN —The city needed at least 15 firefighters to accept a retirement/resignation incentive for the plan to be implemented. It got 18 to take the deal.
The proposal required those taking the incentive to do so in writing by today and to leave by Aug. 29. But that separation date can be extended at the city’s discretion.
Of the 18 who accepted the plan, three want short time extensions because of issues with their pension, said Fire Chief John J. O’Neill Jr. That shouldn’t be a problem, said O’Neill, who will discuss the extensions Monday with Mayor Jay Williams.
The city has to do final calculations, but expects to save between $1.4 million and $1.6 million during the first two years of the program.
Williams applauded the firefighters for their “attitude and approach” toward finding ways to save money for the city.
“They showed a high level of cooperation from the beginning,” he said. “They always do what’s best for the community.”
The buyout plan was offered as a way to help reduce a general fund deficit projected to be more than $3 million by the end of the year and about $6 million by Dec. 31, 2009, if cuts aren’t made. |

Youngstown Gives Firefighters Retirement/resignation Incentive Story from Youngstown Vindicator on 06/16/2008.
YOUNGSTOWN —City council is expected to give final approval Wednesday to a retirement/resignation incentive plan with its firefighters union that will avoid layoffs at the fire department.
At least 15 firefighters must sign up by Friday’s deadline for the incentive program to take effect.
The city has already received confirmation from about 10, said Fire Chief John J. O’Neill Jr. The chief said today he’s “confident” the minimum amount needed to take the deal will do so by the end of the week. The city expects to save between $1.4 million and $1.6 million during the first two years of the program. The more firefighters taking the buyout, the more money the city would save, said city Finance Director David Bozanich.
